My father, Alfred Nieman died in the hospital in Hampstead (London) where I had been born. He departed this world on March 7th 1997 and though his contributions to humanity were inspired, challenging and stubborn I felt that his public recognition was never matched by the private accolades that filtered through, often anecdotally, from his students and colleagues.
In my capacity as a lapsed musician who is in the process of re inventing himself musically I have encountered a number of his ex students. Some speak lovingly of him and others tell anecdotes about how difficult he was. He did love a good argument and I suspect didn't mind being wrong as long as he provoked thought. He was passionate and didn't like complacency.
The purpose of this site at present is to invite people who knew of him to write about their experience with a view to that writing becoming part of this site. I reserve full editorial rights as to what of your writing goes on public display and will always want to be respectful to you and to my father. Please don't let this inhibit you from contributing.
